Farage wins Clacton contest

Nigel Farage has retained the Clacton seat for Reform UK in a by-election triggered by the party leader himself.

BBC News reported that Farage received more votes than he had at the 2024 general election. Turnout in the summer contest was 44%.

No appearance at the declaration

Farage did not attend the declaration at Clacton Leisure Centre and cancelled interviews planned with the BBC and other broadcasters.

He said police had warned him about an attempt to disrupt the result. His aides also pointed to his continuing security concerns. Deluxe Media has not independently reviewed the police advice described in the BBC report.

Standards questions remain

The result does not end scrutiny of Farage's finances. According to the BBC, an inquiry by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards has resumed and Farage is likely to be interviewed in the coming weeks.

The dispute concerns whether a £5m gift from businessman Christopher Harborne, made before Farage became an MP, should have been registered. Farage has maintained that he sought legal advice and was told he did not need to declare the money. He told GB News that he had broken no law or tax law and taken no public money.

Those competing positions remain unresolved. The commissioner's process, rather than the by-election result, will determine what findings are made about compliance with parliamentary rules.
